For baby boomer women, losing weight and dropping those extra pounds can be a challenge and achieving weight loss during menopause and post menopause requires different considerations than at any other age. By understanding the effects of hormonal changes you can avoid the common frustrations that so often accompany losing weight at this time in a woman's life.
Although those challenges may make you feel despondent at first, do not worry! There is plenty you can do to achieve the shape and the weight you want to be including, boosting your motivation, goal setting, hypnosis for weight loss and general help and advice on how to start losing weight.
Why is weight loss during menopause and after menopause more difficult?
Once we pass the age of 40 and every year thereafter the rate at which we burn calories known as our BMR or Basal Metabolic Rate slows down. Your BMR is the rate at which your body burns calories when you are doing nothing. If you are eating more than your BMR and not exercising those additional calories are stored as fat. What this means is that if we want to maintain our current weight we need to reduce our calorie intake and/or increase our level of activity and exercise.
In terms of weight, if you eat 3,500 calories more than your body needs, you will put on about 1 pound. So by overeating just 500 calories a day you would gain 1lb of fat in just one week. Conversely, you need to burn 3,500 to lose 1lb of fat. Other factors arise such hormones, food intollerance and food additives that affect fat storage. It’s no wonder women reach fifty and wonder what on earth has happened to their figure!
When you understand what is stopping you from losing weight or causing you to gain weight you'll realise what to do to make the journey a smooth one. It may surprise you to learn that in order to lose weight you often need to eat more! That is more of the right kinds of foods, which can mean more food than you are currently eating if your food intake is high in sugars and fats. For example you can fill up on fruit, vegetables and protein rich nuts instead of high calorie crisps, dips and cookies that have the added benefit of reducing the desire to snack.
Fat distribution changes during menopause. Any increase in fat would before menopause spread evenly over hips, legs and stomach whereas during menopause and post menopause it accumulates over the abdomen and around the waist, hence the term middle age spread.
This happens because the production of the female hormone oestrogen drops dramatically, while simultaneously an increase in the male hormone testosterone occurs, (the ovaries produce both testosterone and estrogen) and we know that in men excess weight accumulates more on the belly.
Further effects of menopause on women, is that of insulin resistance where the body wants to store fat. Foods high in refined carbohydrates, that contain pesticides, preservatives, trans fats, toxins and super sugars all contribute to insulin resistance.
